Overview

Anchor Lodge is one of those Noyo Harbor buildings that still looks exactly like what it was built to be — a practical motor-court motel where travelers could park close to their rooms and stay right in the middle of the working waterfront.

The long two-story building at 32260 North Harbor Drive has exterior room entrances, an upper walkway, outside stairs and parking directly in front. Its form reflects the mid-century motor-court style that became common as automobile travel reshaped California tourism. Gee Bee's original Fort Bragg history post described the lodge as a classic example of that architecture.

Published visitor information has dated the Anchor Lodge lodging units to the 1940s. The property later developed alongside The Wharf Restaurant and the larger cluster of businesses associated with Noyo Harbor.

Today Anchor Lodge continues to operate as harbor-side lodging, still serving the same basic purpose it has for generations.

Location

Anchor Lodge stands at 32260 North Harbor Drive in Noyo Harbor, below the Highway 1 bridge and close to the Noyo River, harbor docks, restaurants and charter-boat operations.

That location is central to its history.

Noyo Harbor has long been Fort Bragg's working waterfront, shaped by commercial fishing, sport fishing, boat traffic, repair businesses, restaurants, bars, lodging and the people who worked around all of them.

A motel here was never simply a roadside stop. It served fishermen, visitors, families and travelers who came specifically for the harbor, boats, fishing and waterfront life.

Anchor Lodge shares its setting and much of its history with The Wharf Restaurant.

History

The earliest published information places Anchor Lodge's lodging units in the 1940s.

The building represents the type of motor-court lodging that expanded across California during and after the automobile boom. Instead of grand lobbies and formal entrances, these motels were designed around convenience: drive up, park close to the room and carry your belongings only a short distance.

Anchor Lodge brought that model directly into Noyo Harbor.

Its history became closely connected with Jim Cummings, whose name appears repeatedly in community memories involving The Wharf Restaurant, harbor lodging, the trailer park and other businesses around the Noyo Flat.

One longtime resident remembered that businesses owned by Cummings often used the word "Anchor" in their names. Another remembered Cummings as the builder of The Wharf Restaurant and owner of the trailer park and other harbor property, and believed he may also have been connected with the old Anchor Inn building. Those recollections are valuable community history, but they should not be treated as documented construction records without additional evidence.

The Wharf Restaurant began as a modest harbor-side café in the early 1950s and later grew into one of Noyo Harbor's best-known restaurants. Its development alongside lodging and charter fishing made the combination especially natural. A room, a restaurant meal and a fishing trip could all be part of the same harbor visit.

Community memories also connect Cummings with a trailer park on the Noyo Flat.

One former tenant remembered renting a small trailer from him after graduating from Mendocino High School in 1970. Rather than requiring all of the rent in cash, Cummings allowed him to work off part of it through odd jobs around the trailer park and The Wharf Restaurant. He lived there from the fall of 1970 until the spring of 1971 and remembered Cummings as a kind man.

Another longtime memory reaches back to work at The Wharf as a teenager and later returning there for a family meal. That recollection also included the older Anchor Inn bar, remembered for live music on weekends.

The Anchor Inn and Anchor Lodge were separate businesses, although the repeated use of the Anchor name has caused the two to become intertwined in local memory.

Community discussion also remembered an Anchor Ford dealership in Fort Bragg, another example of the Anchor name appearing in connection with businesses associated with the era. One reply placed the dealership across Main Street from Fort Bragg Pharmacy.

Anchor Lodge also became part of Noyo Harbor's sport-fishing world.

One community memory associated harbor lodging around 1974 with the Tally Ho charter boat. That recollection fits the larger pattern of Noyo Harbor, where motels, restaurants and charter fishing operations often served the same visitors.

The lodge continued through later decades as straightforward, affordable harbor lodging.

Some former guests remember staying there repeatedly because the rooms were inexpensive. One recalled many nights at Anchor Lodge and remembered both its older furnishings and the lower rates fondly.

The property has changed considerably in appearance over the years.

Several residents commented on its later improvements. One remembered the lodge as drab and rundown during an earlier visit and was surprised by how much better it looked after renovation. Others described the refreshed property as neat, tidy and much improved.

The lodge's basic architectural character, however, remains easy to recognize.

The broad parking area, exterior room entrances, upper balcony and outside stairways still identify it immediately as an older motor-court motel.

In 2025, The Wharf Restaurant and Anchor Lodge entered another chapter when the properties were purchased by Robert "Bob" Hunt and Pamela Amante, associated with the Beachcomber Hotel Group.

That ownership change connected the property with a local hospitality group already associated with several Fort Bragg coastal lodging properties.

The earlier history remains an open part of the story in several respects. A definitive original construction record for the lodge, the exact sequence of additions to the property and the full ownership chronology before the Cummings era would all benefit from further documentation.

Community Memories

Community memories give Anchor Lodge much of its human history.

One former student returned to Fort Bragg for a high-school reunion and stayed in an upstairs room at the far end of the lodge.

Another guest remembered staying there repeatedly over a two-month period and especially appreciated that the property welcomed dogs.

A former tenant remembered Jim Cummings allowing him to work off trailer rent through odd jobs around The Wharf and the trailer park in 1970 and 1971.

Another longtime resident remembered working at The Wharf as a teenager and recalled the older Anchor Inn bar and its live music.

Others remembered the lodge before its more recent improvements and commented on how much better it looks today.

Those recollections help preserve the role Anchor Lodge played not just as lodging, but as part of the broader social and working life of Noyo Harbor.
