    Overview

Bank of America — archival photograph, Fort Bragg, California

The large commercial building at 228 N. Main Street is still best remembered by many Fort Bragg residents as Bank of America.

Its flat roof, tall narrow windows, broad parking area and institutional appearance reflect its original purpose as a full-service bank built around teller counters, offices and automobile access.

The banking history of the property began before the present building. Longtime residents remember a smaller Bank of America farther north on the lot, with a service station on the Main Street corner and several smaller businesses nearby.

The present building dates to the late 1970s. After the bank years, portions of the building were divided for other tenants, including Mendocino Chocolate Company.

More recently, the property has been considered for another major change involving restaurant, retail, entertainment and residential uses.

    Location

228 N. Main Street occupies a large parcel on the east side of Main Street between Redwood Avenue and Alder Street, across from the downtown commercial core and immediately west of the Fort Bragg Post Office.

The size of the property helps explain why memories associated with the Bank of America site include several earlier buildings and businesses that occupied different portions of the lot before the present structure was built.

    History

    Before the Present Bank Building

Community memories describe a very different property during the 1950s and 1960s.

A service station stood on or near the Main Street corner. Residents also remember smaller commercial buildings in this stretch, including Pete’s shoe repair and the C. Louis Wood automobile dealership or showroom.

Photographs shared with the original discussion show the earlier streetscape before construction of the present bank complex.

Several residents specifically remember a smaller Bank of America building farther north on the property. Some recall banking there during the 1960s, while another remembered a wife working in both the old bank and the larger replacement building.

    The Present Bank of America

The present building was constructed in the late 1970s, with property records giving 1979 as the building date.

The redevelopment replaced the earlier collection of businesses with a much larger banking complex designed for teller service, offices, parking and drive-through banking.

The opening itself became a community memory. One resident recalled his mother and stepfather working as clowns at the celebration and making balloon animals for the crowd.

Other memories include a robbery at the bank. Several residents remembered the incident, although the supplied recollections do not establish exactly when it happened or whether the robber was caught.

For many families, Bank of America was simply part of everyday Fort Bragg life. Residents remember depositing paychecks, working there and opening their first bank accounts. One person remembered having a school savings account while still in fourth grade and contributing one dollar each month.

The property reportedly changed hands in 2004, but Bank of America continued operating there afterward.

    Mendocino Chocolate Company

The large building was eventually divided so other businesses could occupy portions of the property while the bank remained open.

One of the best-remembered later tenants was Mendocino Chocolate Company.

Residents remember buying candy and chocolate there, and published tourism material later listed Mendocino Chocolate Company at 232 N. Main Street, an address associated with the same large building frontage.

For a time, the former single-purpose bank building was home to both banking and chocolate sales.

Community memory places Bank of America’s final closure at about 2012. Later City of Fort Bragg records confirm that the bank had been closed for more than ten years by 2024.

    Later Years and Redevelopment

After the bank and chocolate-shop years, substantial portions of the building became vacant or underused.

Plans considered by the City of Fort Bragg in 2024 proposed converting the former bank into a mixed-use property with a restaurant and arcade, general retail space and four upstairs residential units.

The plans also called for changes to the old drive-through banking areas and other improvements intended to make the former bank suitable for very different uses.

Earlier community discussion identified Bear’s Pizza & More as a business expected to move into the property. Because that move has not been confirmed as completed, it remains part of the proposed redevelopment history rather than being presented as the building’s current established identity.

    Community Memories

The strongest memories of this property reach back beyond the present bank building.

Residents remember the corner service station during the 1950s and early 1960s, the smaller Bank of America farther north on the lot, the automobile dealership or showroom and Pete’s shoe repair.

Together, those memories describe a Main Street frontage made up of several smaller businesses before the property was consolidated into the much larger banking complex.

The Bank of America years produced another generation of memories: employees who worked in both the old and new buildings, children opening their first savings accounts, the grand opening with clowns and balloon animals, and memories of the bank robbery.

Later came a completely different reason to visit the building.

After years of deposits, withdrawals and teller windows, residents remember walking into the former bank property to buy chocolate from Mendocino Chocolate Company.

Some people also remember regretting the loss of the smaller buildings that once occupied the property, while others simply remember the large Bank of America as a familiar part of downtown Fort Bragg.

    Why It Matters

228 N. Main Street tells both the history of banking in Fort Bragg and the story of how Main Street itself has changed.

Before the large bank complex, this part of downtown contained a service station, an earlier Bank of America, automobile-related businesses and small storefronts.

Those buildings gave way to one large institutional property that served generations of Fort Bragg residents.

Then the property began changing again.

Banking gave way to chocolate sales, vacant space and proposals for restaurant, retail, entertainment and residential uses.

The building may never have been considered one of Fort Bragg’s architectural showpieces, but thousands of ordinary moments happened there — first savings accounts, paychecks deposited, people going to work, a grand opening with clowns and balloons, memories of a bank robbery and later trips inside to buy chocolate.

That long sequence of everyday uses is what gives the former Bank of America property its place in Fort Bragg history.
