Dollar Tree

Overview

Dollar Tree occupies 189 Boatyard Drive at the south end of the Boatyard Shopping Center, near the Highway 1 and Highway 20 entrance to Fort Bragg.

Today it is one of the center's larger retail spaces and one of three businesses identified by the current property owner as anchor tenants, alongside Harvest Market and O'Reilly Auto Parts. The entire Boatyard Shopping Center runs from 101 through 189 Boatyard Drive and contains a little over 103,000 square feet of commercial space.

Dollar Tree's own store directory confirms the Fort Bragg location at 189 Boatyard Drive as its Boatyard Shopping Center store.

The building, though, has a much longer retail story than Dollar Tree.

Location

The storefront sits at the far end of the Boatyard Shopping Center, one of Fort Bragg's most heavily used everyday commercial areas.

Its position near the meeting of Highways 1 and 20 is important. What was once remembered as open ground at the south end of town became a regional shopping area serving both Fort Bragg residents and people arriving from inland Mendocino County.

City planning documents have long recognized this part of South Fort Bragg as a regional-serving retail area because of its easy access to both highways.

The transformation was already well underway by the 1980s. State environmental records from 1988 and 1989 document planning for improved access to the Boatyard Shopping Center from the Highway 1, Highway 20 and Ocean View Drive area, showing that the center was already established enough to require significant traffic and access planning.

History

Before the Boatyard Shopping Center, longtime residents remember this area very differently.

Community recollections describe open ground, barns and a much less developed southern entrance to Fort Bragg. Some specifically remember the property as connected with Todd's farm. Those memories also appear in the research gathered for the neighboring Harvest Market history and help explain just how dramatic the arrival of the shopping center seemed at the time.

Then came the Boatyard Shopping Center and, with it, a new kind of retail development for Fort Bragg.

The storefront now occupied by Dollar Tree is especially remembered as the original Fort Bragg Thrifty Drug Store.

That Thrifty chapter is an important piece of local history. The store was more than a pharmacy. Like other Thrifty Drug & Discount stores of the period, it combined prescriptions with general merchandise and the broad selection people expected from the California chain.

For this project there is also unusual firsthand documentation of that opening. Gee Bee worked for Thrifty Drug in Fort Bragg when the store opened, first serving as assistant manager at the new Fort Bragg location before later becoming a Thrifty manager in Rancho Cordova. That personal employment history provides a direct connection to the building's original drugstore period and is part of the original research behind this entry.

The available records place the Boatyard Shopping Center firmly in operation during the 1980s. Harvest Market was founded in May 1985 and became one of the center's original anchors, while state records show Boatyard access improvements entering environmental review by 1988.

That evidence fits the community memory of Thrifty's arrival as part of the center's early development, although an exact documented grand-opening date for the Fort Bragg Thrifty store has not yet surfaced in the records reviewed for this update.

Thrifty itself was one of California's best-known drugstore chains. By 1986 the company operated hundreds of Thrifty Drug and Thrifty Jr. locations throughout California. Rite Aid later acquired Thrifty in 1996, although the Thrifty name continued to survive most visibly through Thrifty Ice Cream.

The Fort Bragg storefront eventually moved beyond its drugstore chapter.

Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree Store No. 5853 opened at 189 Boatyard Drive on January 16, 2015.

That date is unusually well documented. A California legal filing listing Dollar Tree facilities gives the Fort Bragg store number, exact address and opening date as January 16, 2015.

More than a decade later, Dollar Tree remains at the same address. The company continues to identify the location as its Fort Bragg Boatyard Shopping Center store.

The store has therefore become another long-running chapter in a building that many residents still mentally associate with Thrifty.

Timeline

Earlier years — Community memories describe this part of South Fort Bragg as open ground, barns and farm property before large-scale commercial development.

1980s — The Boatyard Shopping Center develops into one of Fort Bragg's major retail areas near the Highway 1 and Highway 20 junction.

May 1985 — Harvest Market begins operation and becomes one of the center's early anchor businesses.

1980s — Thrifty Drug opens its Fort Bragg store in the storefront now associated with 189 Boatyard Drive. The exact opening date remains an open part of the story, but firsthand local history places Thrifty among the center's important early businesses.

1988–1989 — Environmental review records document improvements to vehicle access between the Boatyard Shopping Center and the Highway 1/Ocean View Drive intersection.

1990s and later — The Thrifty chapter ends as the California drugstore industry changes and the Thrifty chain is ultimately acquired by Rite Aid.

January 16, 2015 — Dollar Tree Store No. 5853 opens at 189 Boatyard Drive.

2026 — The Boatyard Shopping Center is acquired by Argonaut Investments. The company lists Dollar Tree, Harvest Market and O'Reilly as the center's anchor tenants.

The Building Today

Dollar Tree may look like a straightforward modern discount store, but the address carries several different Fort Bragg eras.

There is the remembered farm and open-ground period. There is the arrival of the Boatyard Shopping Center and the transformation of the south end of town into a major shopping area. There is the Thrifty Drug period, remembered by employees and shoppers who watched the center take shape. And since January 2015, there has been Dollar Tree.

The merchandise changed, the signs changed and the businesses changed, but the building kept doing essentially the same job: serving as one of the larger everyday retail stops at Fort Bragg's southern gateway.
