Overview

Headlands Coffeehouse at 120 E. Laurel Street became one of Fort Bragg’s familiar downtown gathering places.

Opening in the mid-1990s, the coffeehouse offered coffee, simple food and live music, but its importance went beyond what was on the menu.

For locals and visitors, Headlands became a comfortable place to meet, sit awhile, listen to music or warm up on a rainy coastal day.

Location

Headlands Coffeehouse sits at 120 E. Laurel Street in downtown Fort Bragg.

The location is part of an older commercial block that has held a changing collection of businesses over the years.

Its downtown setting helped make Headlands an easy meeting place and a natural part of a trip downtown.

History

Before Headlands, the storefront had other identities.

One longtime resident remembered Keith Florist operating here around 1976 or 1977.

Community memories also brought back the larger Laurel Street neighborhood, including the Laurel Street Deli, KOZT radio, an alley and a Guatemalan shop remembered in connection with the area.

KOZT was nearby rather than in the Headlands storefront. Residents remembered walking past the station and looking through a small window at the DJ. Another recollection placed KOZT in the space later associated with the bar area at Cucina Verona.

Headlands Coffeehouse opened in the mid-1990s when a local family converted the storefront into a neighborhood café.

From the beginning, it centered on coffee, simple food, music and a welcoming atmosphere.

Over time, regular customers turned it into a meeting place, while visitors discovered it and returned on later trips. Live music gave people another reason to stay, helping Headlands become part of downtown Fort Bragg’s social life.

The Building Today

Headlands continues to occupy its familiar Laurel Street location.

The storefront remains part of an active downtown block whose businesses have changed repeatedly over the decades.

After years at the same address, Headlands has become strongly identified with the corner and with the coffee, conversation and music people experienced there.

Community Memories
