Some Mendocino storefronts sit right where the village meets the ocean, and this one has been part of Main Street life for more than 150 years.

Overview

Today 45140 Main Street is home to Ledges Ocean Sports, a family-owned Mendocino Coast shop centered on surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, free diving, snorkeling, open-water swimming, boogie boarding and other ways of getting out on the water. The shop offers both rentals and retail gear and describes its approach as one built around coastal life and respect for the land and sea.

But for many longtime Mendocino residents, this building will always be remembered by another name: Alphonso's.

Location

The building stands at 45140 Main Street in Mendocino, in the ocean-facing row of historic commercial buildings along the south side of the village's Main Street. Its location has kept it tied to Mendocino commerce through generations of very different businesses.

History

Kelley House Museum records take the story back to about 1874.

The present building was constructed as Abram Everson's General Store after an October 1870 fire destroyed this block of Mendocino. It later served as an early office of the Mendocino Bank of Commerce. By the 1940s, Carl Swanson and his family were living in the building.

An old water tower once stood behind Everson's store. It survived for many years after its original use ended and was still standing without its tank in 1993, but had disappeared by 2021.

Then came the chapter that seems to have left the strongest mark on local memory.

From 1970 until 2004, the building was Alphonso's Mercantile.

A later business at the address was Twist, an environmentally focused retail store associated with 45140 Main Street beginning in 1999. Period visitor information also listed Twist at this location.

The Building Today

Today Ledges Ocean Sports gives the old general-store building another distinctly Mendocino purpose. Instead of nineteenth-century provisions or the beads and incense remembered from Alphonso's, the shelves now serve surfers, divers, swimmers and others headed toward the Pacific.

Why It Matters

The merchandise has changed many times, but after roughly a century and a half, 45140 Main Street is still doing much the same job it was built to do: welcoming people through the door and supplying them with something they came to Mendocino looking for.

Community Memories

The replies to the original post bring the Alphonso's era right back to life. People remember going into Alphonso's for beads, incense, unusual merchandise and single clove cigarettes. One memory describes coming home smelling so strongly of incense that parents immediately knew where the kids had been. Another simply remembers that you never knew what you were going to find inside.

Those memories help explain why, even decades later, longtime residents still identify the building as "Alphonso's."
