Mendocino County Guns sits along the north Highway 1 stretch where Fort Bragg begins to feel less like downtown and more like the practical edge of town, with small shops, storage spaces, service businesses, specialty stores, and buildings that have changed uses as the town changed around them.

The current gun shop is only one chapter in a property remembered for Mitchell Electric, family living space upstairs, neighboring surplus and thrift businesses, Dave's Trading Post, Ed's Guns, and now Mendocino County Guns.

Location

History

One of the oldest community memories connected with the property is Mitchell Electric.

According to local recollection, the entire building was once owned by Mitchell Electric, and the Mitchell family lived upstairs. That gives the building an older mixed-use history, with business downstairs and family life above, the kind of arrangement that was once much more common in small towns.

Other memories connect the larger property with a cluster of neighboring businesses, including Surplus Etc., thrift-store use, mini storage, an army-surplus style business, and Dave's Trading Post.

A newer comment helped clear up one part of that history. The old army-surplus business was remembered as being next door to the gun shop rather than in the current gun-shop space itself. That distinction matters because several businesses appear to have operated side by side within the larger property over the years, and memories of them can easily blend together.

The firearms chapter predates the current Mendocino County Guns name.

Older dealer listings connect the address with Ed's Guns, which operated here before the present business. Community memory adds that Ed eventually retired to Texas and sold the gun shop to the current owner. Another local recollection says that Ed has since moved back to the Fort Bragg area.

That gives the gun-store history a clearer sequence: Ed's Guns came first at this property, followed by Mendocino County Guns under new ownership.
