History

The story of this building connects directly to the older courthouse remembered at Main and Laurel.

Longtime local memory places the old courthouse on the west side of Main Street at the corner of Main and Laurel. That location became part of one of the most painful chapters in Fort Bragg history when the September 1987 arson fires swept through town.

The Fort Bragg Library at Main and Laurel was destroyed, and the adjacent Ten Mile Justice Court was also lost. Those fires were part of the same arson spree that destroyed the Piedmont Hotel and left a lasting scar on the town.

That connection matters because 700 South Franklin represents a later chapter of the same public-service story.

Fort Bragg's court and county-service presence did not begin here. The older courthouse belonged to the downtown Main Street era, when major civic buildings were packed into the center of town alongside stores, hotels, bars, and everyday business life.

The South Franklin complex belongs to a different time — more institutional, more spread out, and designed around the practical needs of modern government.

The Building Today

Today, 700 South Franklin Street continues to serve as a major county justice and law-enforcement center on the coast.

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Fort Bragg Substation operates here, along with the Superior Court's Ten Mile Branch and the District Attorney's Coast Office.
