This side of the building tells the story better - plain shingles, yellow doors, a simple sign, and a small storefront tucked into one of Mendocino's most recognizable corners.

Today Nahara occupies space at 45000 Main Street, but the address itself reaches back into some of the earliest commercial history of Mendocino.

    Overview

Nahara currently describes itself as an EcoLuxe boutique and healing-arts spa offering natural-fiber clothing, artisanal jewelry, handcrafted hats, art books, fine fragrance, massage, facial and body treatments, and other wellness services. Its current website lists the business at 45000 Main Street D.

The building stands directly across from the small triangular intersection traditionally called the Wye, where Lansing Street meets Main Street. Kelley House Museum identifies the building at this corner as the Kelley Building.

    Location

The Wye is more than just an unusual intersection.

Kelley House Museum explains that Main Street addresses change at Lansing Street from the 44xxx series to the 45xxx series. The Kelley Building at 45000 Main Street serves as the reset point. Under the countywide numbering system adopted in the 1970s, the number reflects the building's location roughly 45 miles west of Ukiah by the historic Comptche-Ukiah route.

That makes 45000 Main Street something of a geographic landmark as well as a commercial address.

    History

The building itself is much older than its current businesses.

Kelley House Museum identifies the structure on the northwest corner of Lansing and Main as William H. Kelley's former general merchandise store. A historic photograph from 1898 shows a Pentecost parade passing the building while it was occupied by Brown & Gray General Merchandise.

Brown & Gray had gone into business together in 1885. Six years later, in 1891, they leased Kelley's old store and moved their general merchandise operation into this corner building. They remained there until announcing their retirement and close-out sale in September 1907.

Another Kelley House photograph dates the building itself to about 1874 and identifies William H. Kelley as its builder for his general merchandise business.

    The Building Today

Beneath the current boutique appearance is a building that has been part of Mendocino commerce for roughly a century and a half.

Nahara represents one of the newest chapters. Its current business combines boutique retail with healing arts and wellness services, while the building continues the same basic role it had in Kelley's time: a place where people come through the door to shop, meet and do business.

The exact sequence of every tenant between Brown & Gray and the more recent shops remains an open part of the story. Old directories, photographs, business advertisements, property files and additional community memories may eventually fill in more of those years.

    Why It Matters

At 45000 Main Street, Nahara is occupying far more than a small storefront. It is operating inside one of the buildings that helped establish Mendocino's commercial center - and one important enough that the modern street-numbering system effectively starts over at its front door.

    Community Memories

One reply adds several useful details about the building's more recent commercial history.

For about fifteen years, part of the property was remembered as Blooming. That business later moved around the corner into a space beneath a restaurant.

Before Blooming, the same area is remembered as having a perfume shop whose proprietor also showed movies upstairs.

The reply also confirms an architectural detail that is easy to miss from Main Street: apartments exist upstairs and are reached from the interior courtyard.
