It is remembered by many as the old Fort Bragg DMV, and later as the home of Fort Bragg Credit Union. Those are not glamorous uses, but they are exactly the kind of everyday places that become woven into people's lives. This part of Franklin Street has long been suited to offices, small businesses, services, banks, agencies, and places where people handled the official and practical business of daily life. Unlike the highway businesses on South Main, this is a more walkable downtown setting, where errands could be stacked together — one stop for paperwork, another for banking, another across the street or down the block.

That location made sense for both of the building's best-remembered uses. A DMV office needed to be accessible to town residents, and a local credit union belonged naturally in the downtown business district.

History

Public property listings describe 120 North Franklin as a 5,000-square-foot building, with one real estate record giving 1990 as the year built. That date may reflect a major remodel, later construction record, or the current version of the building rather than the full history people remember at this address.

The strongest community memory is the DMV. Several people remembered this as Fort Bragg's old DMV office. One person recalled getting a driver's license here in 1980, while another remembered the DMV being in this building before it was remodeled.

That kind of history rarely gets preserved in official building summaries, but it matters. In 2013, when Fort Bragg Community Federal Credit Union members approved a merger with Mendo Lake Credit Union, reporting said the Mendo Lake branch would move into the Fort Bragg Credit Union office at 120 North Franklin Street. The same report noted that Fort Bragg Credit Union had served members since 1952.

The Building Today

The DMV and credit union chapters have both moved on. The current Fort Bragg DMV field office is listed by the state at 410 South Franklin Street, while the current Community First Credit Union branch is listed at 147 North Franklin Street.

That leaves 120 North Franklin as one of those downtown buildings that sits between remembered uses. Some people still connect it with the DMV. Others remember it as Fort Bragg Credit Union. The name on the building now gives it a newer identity, but the older civic and financial memories are still part of the place.
