Some Fort Bragg buildings do not have to be grand landmarks to carry a lot of town history. Sometimes the story is found in the change between what people once bought there and what brings them through the door today.

The storefront at 250 North Main Street is now home to Taka’s Grill, a Japanese restaurant serving sushi, udon, grilled dishes, lunch specials, and seasonal local seafood.

Over the years, Taka’s has become a familiar part of Fort Bragg’s downtown restaurant scene. It is the kind of place people mention when talking about favorite local meals, good sushi, or where to take someone who wants something different from the usual coastal fare.

History

Before the storefront became Taka’s Grill, many Fort Bragg residents remember it as Rexall Pharmacy.

That name brings back a very different kind of Main Street business. Rexall was not remembered only as a place to pick up prescriptions. Like many traditional downtown drugstores, it carried a mixture of medicine, household necessities, personal-care products, small gifts, and everyday items.

One community memory described it simply as a place that had a little bit of everything.

Businesses like Rexall played an important role in older downtown life. People stopped in regularly, often without making a special trip. The pharmacy was part errand stop, part neighborhood business, and part familiar meeting place where employees and customers came to recognize one another.

From Rexall to Taka’s Grill

The change from a traditional pharmacy to a Japanese restaurant may seem dramatic, but the storefront itself remained well suited to both.

Its large front windows, street visibility, central location, and easy access made it useful retail space when Rexall occupied the building. Those same features now help make it a welcoming downtown restaurant.

The shelves of medicine and household goods are gone. In their place are sushi, ankimo, udon, grilled plates, lunches, dinners, and seasonal local uni when it is available.

The products, signs, and smells coming through the doorway changed completely, but the building continued serving much the same community role. It remained a place where people stopped during their day, saw familiar faces, and added another memory to North Main Street.

Why This Place Matters

Downtown history is often built through ordinary errands and regular meals rather than major events.

People remember Rexall because they shopped there, picked up prescriptions, browsed the shelves, or stopped for something they needed. People know Taka’s because they meet there for lunch, order sushi, celebrate a meal, or return to a favorite downtown restaurant.

That is what makes 250 North Main Street worth remembering.

The business changed from pharmacy shelves to sushi plates, but the storefront remained active, useful, and connected to everyday Fort Bragg life.
