Overview

Some Fort Bragg buildings do not need storefront windows or old commercial trim to matter. Some of them helped raise the town.

Dana Gray Elementary School is one of those places. Located on East Chestnut Street, it has been part of Fort Bragg's school story since the mid-1950s, serving generations of children, families, teachers, and school staff.

Dana Gray's actual history begins earlier than some directory records suggest. Fort Bragg Unified's own Dana Gray history states that the school was established in 1956. A July 17, 1957 Press Democrat reference to the Union School Board discussing acceptance of Dana Gray School also supports the mid-1950s timeline.

That helps clear up confusion caused by a 1980 date that appears in some state directory records. Based on the district history, newspaper reference, and community memories, 1980 appears more likely to reflect an administrative or district paperwork date rather than the first year the campus operated.

The comments were especially important in restoring the earlier timeline. One strong recollection places Dana Gray opening for classes in September 1956, with Bill Markee as principal. That same memory described the original campus layout in detail: west-wing classrooms for fourth through sixth grades, a cafeteria and all-purpose room between the wings, and the library and nurse's office in the east wing. The playground was remembered as mostly dirt, with only sidewalks and basketball courts paved.

Other memories placed students at Dana Gray in 1960, from 1961 through 1963, and in the late 1960s. Those recollections line up with the documented 1956–57 beginning and show that Dana Gray was already well established long before the later directory date.

The Building Today
