Farmers Insurance - Rick Friar

Some Fort Bragg buildings change completely on the surface but never quite lose the stories attached to them. This little Main Street office has gone from badges, police reports, tickets, and jail cells to insurance forms, policies, and office desks, but plenty of people still remember exactly what used to happen inside.

Today, 153 North Main Street is home to Farmers Insurance - Rick Friar, the local insurance office run by Rick Friar. It is the kind of practical downtown business people usually think about when life suddenly gets complicated — a fender-bender, storm damage, a roof leak, a new driver in the family, or one of those grown-up problems nobody asked for but everybody eventually meets.

But this building has a much more official past.

Location

153 North Main Street sits in downtown Fort Bragg beside another important part of the city's civic history.

The Fort Bragg Fire Department is still next door at 141 North Main Street, and the city's own fire history notes that the present firehouse property is the same property once occupied by Fort Bragg's first City Hall and Fire Department. That early building served two purposes, with City Hall upstairs and fire equipment downstairs.

So this little stretch of Main Street was never just another downtown block. For years, public safety, city business, fire response, police work, and local government were all clustered together here.

History

Before becoming an insurance office, 153 North Main Street is remembered by many longtime residents as the headquarters of the Fort Bragg Police Department.

The memories are unusually vivid. People remembered paying tickets there, being questioned there, spending the night there, and dealing with the kind of "room service" only an old police station could provide. One local memory even says there is still a jail cell inside the building, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes an old civic building more interesting than its current appearance might suggest.

The comment thread places the Police Department here from at least the 1950s into the 1990s, with one memory putting the move out of the building around 1996. Owen Hablitzel is also remembered as police chief during the 1950s and 1960s.

There were memories of the Fire Department next door, the atmosphere inside the old police station, and even of a nearby building being used as a steam laundry at one point.

That is the kind of layered Main Street history I like finding. The official records give you the dates and the civic uses, but the people who were actually there remember the sound of the place, the jokes, the embarrassment, the fear, and sometimes the night they would probably rather forget.

The Building Today

Today, the building has settled into a quieter role as the office of Farmers Insurance agent Rick Friar.

Instead of police reports, tickets, interviews, and holding cells, the work now revolves around insurance policies, claims, coverage, and helping people prepare for the problems that can come with cars, homes, storms, accidents, and everyday life.

On the surface, that sounds like a complete change, but in a funny way the building is still connected to problem-solving.

It used to be where people went when trouble had already arrived. Now it is where people go hoping to be ready before trouble shows up.

Why It Matters

That is what makes 153 North Main Street worth remembering.

It is a small building, easy to pass without giving much thought to what went on there before the insurance signs went up. But for decades, this was connected to some of Fort Bragg's most basic civic functions and to a lot of very personal memories.

Some people walked in to pay a ticket. Some worked there. Some were questioned there. Some spent a night they probably never forgot.

Now people walk through the same doors to talk about insurance.

The use changed, the desks changed, and the badges disappeared, but the building stayed put, carrying one of those old Fort Bragg stories that would be easy to miss unless somebody stopped and asked what used to be there.
