Prentice Gallery — Whited Bungalow

Some Mendocino buildings seem made for art before anyone ever hangs a painting on the wall.

Overview

Prentice Gallery sits at 45050 Main Street, looking toward the ocean and Mendocino Headlands from one of the village's most recognizable stretches of Main Street.

Today the property is home to Prentice Gallery, Fine Art & Custom Picture Framing. The gallery represents a broad collection of artists working in painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork, jewelry and other media, with a strong emphasis on artists of the Mendocino Coast and Northern California.

The story of the gallery itself began before it reached Main Street. Lynne Prentice came to the Mendocino Coast as a freelance illustrator moving toward fine art. Her father, Thayer Prentice, began making frames for her work in his garage at Irish Beach. What started around a kitchen table grew into a framing business called Artshack in Fort Bragg and later into a larger gallery and frame shop. After her father's death, Lynne renamed the business Prentice Gallery in his memory.

Location

Prentice Gallery is at 45050 Main Street, directly across from the Ford House area and facing the ocean side of the village.

The gallery occupies a landscaped property rather than the continuous storefront arrangement seen farther east along Main Street. A white picket fence, gardens and several buildings give it the feeling of an older Mendocino residence adapted to commercial use.

The gallery's own website continues to list 45050 Main Street as its Mendocino location.

History

The building has a name and history that reach well before Prentice Gallery. The newly updated 2026 Inventory of Structures for the Mendocino Historic Preservation District identifies the main building at 45050 Main Street as the Whited Bungalow.

According to that inventory, the bungalow is documented by 1924 and is classified as a historic Category IIb structure. Even more interesting, the inventory notes that the property was the site of the Alhambra Hotel. The 1924 documentation is tied to an August 22, 1924 Mendocino Beacon reference.

The property continued to develop shortly afterward. A separate Whited Garage west of the main building is documented in 1925.

Another layer was added much later. The historic inventory records two square buildings at the rear of the Main Street property containing five shops, documented in 1985. That helps explain why what appears from Main Street to be a quiet bungalow and garden property has supported considerably more commercial activity than the front view suggests.

Prentice Gallery also had another Mendocino address before arriving here.

After operating in Fort Bragg, Lynne Prentice moved the gallery into the original Zacha Bay Window Gallery building in Mendocino. Older Mendocino Art Center material places Prentice Gallery at 45110 Main Street. The business later moved "uptown" to 45050 Main Street, where it occupies multiple buildings on the property.

By 2019, Prentice Gallery was firmly established at the present address, with spacious gallery rooms, ocean views and an adjoining custom frame shop. A contemporary account described the gallery as displaying the work of more than 35 artists and noted that Lynne and her father had begun their framing operation roughly twenty years earlier.

The Building Today

Today the gallery continues that combination of art and framing, carrying work by numerous regional artists while preserving the residential scale, gardens and ocean-facing character of the old Whited property.

Why It Matters

This little Main Street art gallery has several stories layered underneath it: the site of the Alhambra Hotel, the 1920s Whited Bungalow, later shops and outbuildings, and finally a gallery whose own history stretches from a father and daughter making frames in Irish Beach to Artshack in Fort Bragg, the old Zacha gallery building, and this ocean-facing home on Main Street.
