Overview

Community First Credit Union occupies a Franklin Street property that has served several generations of Fort Bragg residents in very different ways.

Today it is once again a financial institution, but longtime residents also remember the building as Crocker Bank, Wells Fargo, and Figueiredo's Video.

Community memories reach even farther back to a market, grocery store, and pool hall associated with the site before the present building took shape.

Location

Community First Credit Union is at 147 N. Franklin Street near Fort Bragg's downtown commercial core.

Franklin Street has long carried a mix of banks, stores, restaurants, offices, and service businesses running parallel to Main Street.

Its visibility and easy access made the property well suited for businesses built around regular customer visits.

History

Community memories suggest commercial activity on this corner predates the present building.

One longtime resident remembered a market here during the 1950s associated with the Duncan family. Another recalled a small grocery store and later a pool hall in the area now occupied by the northeast portion of the parking lot.

The present building is strongly remembered first as Crocker Bank, operating here by the mid-1970s.

Former employees and customers remember the old bank interior, promotional cocker spaniel toys, and even the distinctive smell of paper, ink, and money.

Wells Fargo followed Crocker Bank and is remembered at this address during the 1980s, including a specific recollection from 1986–87.

The building later took on a very different identity as Figueiredo's Video.

For another generation, Figueiredo's — also remembered simply as Figs or “Figgie's” — became one of those familiar places where choosing a weekend movie was part of everyday Fort Bragg life.

The old bank building had gone from deposits and withdrawals to videotapes and movie rentals, but it remained a regular downtown stop.

The property eventually returned to financial services as Community First Credit Union.

A major remodel in 2018 updated the older commercial structure and created the cleaner, more contemporary appearance seen today.

Community Memories

Residents remember this address through several distinct eras.

Some remember working at Crocker Bank or visiting it with family. Others remember Wells Fargo during the 1980s.

For many who grew up during the video-rental era, Figueiredo's is the name that stands out most strongly.
